Once one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Burma has degenerated into a land of poverty, war, disease, and dispossession. A litany of government human rights abuses against its own people includes restrictions to freedom of speech and religious worship, torture, oppression, forced labor, rape, murder and summary executions. These well-documented crimes against humanity stand as unfading indictments against the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) (previously known as the State Law and Order Restoration Council or SLORC), who have, since the brutal crushing of pro-democracy demonstrations in 1988 that resulted in thousands of deaths, ruled Burma with the iron fist of fear. What was once the golden land of prosperity is now a ravaged and tormented land. It is a "land of fear." [more]
