I have your "ubiquitous computer" right here.. Researchers at the Intel Research Pittsburgh laboratory in Oakland are working on a project called "Internet Suspend/Resume" that allows a person to suspend a virtual computing environment on one computer and resume it on any other with files, settings, and programs migrating over to the new environment. I would argue in many ways this capability is already here using a Knoppix CD and a usb key drive. [O'Reilly Weblogs]
