The audio digital darkroom. Today's 9-minute podcast is both a meditation on audio editing and an experiment with it. Here's the transcript:
The other day at the library, I picked up a copy of Listening to America, which is a history of the first 25 years of National Public Radio. I was fifteen when NPR started back in 1971, and I don't remember much about its early days, but this book brought back a lot of memories. Edited by Linda Wertheimer, it's a selection of episodes that represent each of the years from 1971 to 1995, transcribed from NPR's audio archives.

w00t! Hot off the presses, copies of Mike Gunderloy's excellent new book, Painless Project Management with FogBugz, just arrived in the Fog Creek Office!
This book covers FogBugz 4.0 in detail. I wrote the foreword, which you can read here.
Astute readers will note that FogBugz 4.0 is not quite available for sale yet, but it will be, by March 1st. We're also going to be selling Mike Gunderloy's book on the Fog Creek online store, which will be the first inventory item in the history of Fog Creek, so we'll need to make some changes to the online store software.

Tracking Lab Samples. An interesting press release on new technology for tracking lab samples. Maxell Corporation of America has announced the demonstration of its RFID embedded sample storage tube products for scientific and medical laboratories. The RFID-based demonstration was developed by Maxell with Kobe Bio Robotix and Tsubakimoto Chain in Japan. The demonstration shows how the pharmaceutical industry and academic institutions, for example, can use RFID for the management of high-value samples and stores of compounds. With 2D coding having already superseded linear barcodes for identification purposes, Maxell and its partners see RFID as a next-generation technology that could also transform how laboratories track and trace their specimens. Maxell's family of products includes single sample tubes and full systems for a standard sample tube rack. Specimen tubes include either a removable bottom (which encapsulates a rewritable RFID chip) or a permanently attached encapsulated RFID chip. Imagine what a system like this could do for reducing human errors in lab tests by automating sample tracking. [O'Reilly Weblogs]
