My Sister's Getting Married ... On The Internet
I'm off to Las Vegas for my sister's wedding. She's getting married in the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel by an Elvis impersonator. (At least it's not to an Elvis impersonator.) I was alarmed this week when I found out via email that the ceremony would be on the Internet. Visions of pay-per-view and C-list celebrities filled my head. As it turns out, the main chapel has a webcam that broadcasts their ceremonies year-round. So it's relatively harmless. Even my mom was fine with it. 3:36:19 PM |

From "Big Yummy" to "P-Geezy"
Yesterday was marked by the arrival of the University of Texas football media guide, an event that makes me jump around like Steve Martin in The Jerk, celebrating the new phone books: "The new media guide's here! The new media guide's here!" Over the years, the media guide has grown from 4x9 inch pamphlet to a 400-page monster with a slick cover. The books are sent to media outlets all over the country, as well as to season ticket holders and potential recruits, and contain all the info you'd want to know about this year's team and the history of Texas football. So far, I haven't been able to find my favorite feature of years past: the page where the players rank their teammates in such categories as "Best Nickname", "Mr. GQ", "Funniest", and "Hardest Hitter". That page goes a long way toward determining which players I feel a special fondness toward each year. Last year, I watched closely for defensive tackle Marco Martin to break into the starting lineup and begin creating havoc. Known as "Big Yummy", the 340-pound Martin was fun to cheer for, even if his on-field exploits were limited. This year, I've got my eye on senior safety Phillip Geiggar, whose nickname is "P-Geezy". Geiggar is a former special teams standout who has turned into a team leader. He's even contributing journal entries on the official UT football site. The season begins in 24 days. You can bet the countdown is on. 3:30:33 PM |
