What is podcasting and why should I care?

Podcasting is a new way to find audio shows you're interested in and listen to them when you want. Its roots are in blogging and personal MP3 playlists - two mediums that are very personal and individualized. Call it homebrew radio, an audio blog, or TiVo for your iPod: podcasting allows people to zero in on shows that speak to their passions - technology, slam poetry, cooking with garlic - and take those shows with them wherever they go.

The most common tool for finding podcasts is iPodder, which uses the RSS syndication tool to download podcasts to your computer. From there you sync them with your MP3 player, and listen whenever, and wherever, you want.

But listening to your favorite shows when you want is only half the fun. Not only can to listen to a new style of radio, you can make it yourself. With a microphone and some free recording software, making a podcast and sharing it online is as easy as clicking a button and talking.
