Speaking of the Pygmalion Effect on Wednesday, I was reminded of the Galatea Effect, an even more powerful possibility available within organizations. Whereas with the Pygmalion Effect, people rise to the level of the expectations of others, in the Galatea Effect, they rise to the level of their own expectations. Self-fulfilling prophecy has a powerful performance impact.
Talking with a plant manager yesterday, we started to identify his key value-addeds for his company. We hit upon developing the skills of all of the people who report to him as the first key for him as an effective manager.
However, given the Galatea Effect, it is probable that his most important contribution is helping to raise the self-concept and self-esteem of the employees. It follows that people with high self esteem will picture themselves as successful and effective contributors. Training and development activities can help people create a picture of what "successful" looks like. But the true power is in helping them see themselves as the successful person in the picture.
Some of these cartoons are not fit for children, but hey, we're all adults here! Right? Click on any link within this rathergood.com blog and expect to be hugely entertained.
