A guest writer from New Zealand sent a wonderful piece my way recently. It discusses the results you can obtain from a coaching approach to employee performance improvement, rather than a disciplinary approach. The disciplinary approach is often the first considered by managers and the coaching approach applies a much more employee-friendly way of addressing performance issues.
In fact, I liked Robin Nitschke's approach so well that I copied the article and asked two managers in a client company to try it out. The first manager applied the process to multiple areas in which a supervisor's performance needs improvement, including working fewer hours before she burns herself out. The second manager applied the process to a specific area of improvement for an employee.
The first was a bit more cumbersome, but with practice, I am sure it will apply to multiple behavior change needs. The second, with one required change, worked perfectly, as the manager related the results to me. Now, we'll wait the ninety days, but I expect that the results of both interactions will show exceptional improvement in employee performance. I am thankful every day that I have clients who are willing to try new approaches for their potential benefit and hopefully, mine, to share with others.
