Today, I've been reading the reaction in the press to Dan Rather's interview of Saddam Hussein which aired on television in the U.S.A. last night. I also admit I didn't choose to watch it.
It is beyond my comprehension that CBS provided airtime for Saddam Hussein to put his particular spin in the ears of the American public. I chose not to be spun.
And, this is one of the three major national news networks that decided not to carry President George W. Bush's speech about Iraq, nationally, on October 7, 2002. FOX aired the speech but CBS, NBC, and ABC chose not to air the speech purportedly because the White House had not officially requested that they air it. (White House representatives said they had been afraid of stirring up alarm in the American public.)
No matter the story here. I just find it incongruous that Saddam Hussein has airtime and George W. Bush does not.
Given the impact of war on organizations considering the numbers of reservists that have been called up for military duty already and the feelings of the families and friends of soldiers who died in the Gulf War, what can the leaders at CBS have been thinking about when they chose to give Saddam Hussein a world-wide platform for his spin?
This is not news; this is insulting idiocy.
