Power of Peers

Staff members at Yahoo identify interesting websites over the course of the year. You can take a look at the 2002 choices at the link below. Some are very interesting, some creative, some single topic focused, but all are worth a look in your spare time. Some will make you scratch your head and wonder why people don't get a life.

Yahoo 2002

More from The Tipping Point: today I was reading about teenagers and smoking. Malcolm Gladwell looked at studies to determine why, despite all the health information available today, young people still smoke. He found a lot of very useful information, but the point  that struck home with me is that an "influential" peer was usually the source of the young person's imitative and harmful smoking behavior. The peer was seen as "cool." The cool peer smoked. Thus, if you want to be cool ...

Can we get something similar going in the workplace? Create a set of influentials that people think of as "cool" to influence behavior, committment and actions. I'll be thinking about this all week as I have been asked to write a one page paper on how to change culture.

Have a good week.

Warmly,

Susan
