I watched the American President's speech about Iraq this evening on television. I thought his demeanor and arguments were compelling.
But even more than that, the thought that is dominating my thinking since the speech is how grateful I am that I live in a country where the President communicates the rationale and thinking to the citizens. Even in the Dan Rather interview with Saddam Hussein, which I panned earlier, I am left with the knowledge that there are very few places on earth that would have televised that interview.
During the question and answer segment of George W. Bush's presentation, the reporters asked questions that would be grounds for severe punishment in large parts of the world.
I am grateful to live in a world community, here in America, that allows dissent. Much as I find the peace protesters ill-informed and ill-advised, they have the right to march. And, Saddam Hussein has the ability to stop the war if he so chooses.
May he choose peace with the world community.
