Individual women also have the responsibility to be aware of the salaries and treatment within their work environment. If they find discrepencies, they need to articulate their rights and what they are willing to put up with.
One of my clients discovered a $30,000 discrepency between her salary and her male counterpart's salary. He's been doing the job longer, but she has more responsibility, more departments, and more people reporting to her. At my urging, and because it was negatively impacting her motivation at work, she talked to her boss about the situation.
The discussion resulted in a $10,000 raise which, even with his longer tenure, is still unacceptable. She is hoping that more of the difference will disappear with raises for next year and is considering her options if this doesn't happen.
I think she'll look at options and the employer will lose one of its most dedicated, hardworking, effective employees. It's a matter of too little, too late.
Devalue people's work at your potential loss.
