Trying to write an ad today for a Chief Financial Officer, I found myself using words such as "seasoned," "mature," "responsible," and "versatile." In my search for sample ads, I found many heartening, uplifting stories about people over 50 finding excellent jobs. Yes, it's tough for the mature, seasoned crowd, but finding a job is doable, say most of the articles.
A Career Journal article, "Why That Post-50 Job Is Getting Harder to Find," by Steve Weiner, warned middle aged adults that all is not sunshine in the job search. He provides a more realistic analysis of the difficulties in getting hired when you are older. Weiner warns that mature job seekers have to overcome the "the triple barriers of tight budgets, managerial fear and age prejudice?"
As a mature manager, companies may find your salary expensive; younger managers may fear your experience and willingness to accept marching orders; you may remind many HR people and hiring managers of their old fogy parents.
Weiner says that, under this triple threat, "those positive professional traits that you value most about yourself may be exactly the same factors that make you toast at many companies."
