Yesterday I introduced the book club idea. "It is also a great way to share meaning and content concepts that then become part of the organization's language, history, and culture."
As an example, at TechSmith, we read Jim Collins' book, Good to Great. I don't think that anyone who read the book will ever forget his "hedgehog" concept that describes an organization finding its way (core mission that only it can do) and then going on to become great.
"First who, then what" provides the clearly understandable concept of: get the best, smartest people you can find on your bus, then worry about where they will sit later.
Take a look at the full review by About's Management Guide, John Reh. He discusses another concept, Level 5 leader, as a term that can become part of your company's language.
"Collins characterizes the Level 5 leader as 'a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will.' The Level 5 leader is not the 'corporate savior' or 'turnaround expert'. Most of the CEOs of the Good To Great companies as they made the transition were company insiders. They were more concerned about what they could 'build, create and contribute' than what they could 'get - fame, fortune, adulation, power, whatever'."
