Retreating and Teaming

I'm off tomorrow to attend a planning retreat with one of my manufacturing clients. We're heading up north in Michigan to Walloon Lake, a class A Michigan lake in the world of water wonderland.

We're starting the retreat by reviewing the present situation: financials, sales, customers, headcount, and so on. From there, we'll look at threats and opportunities in the form of new product lines, new customers, and competitors. We'll review the mission and vision we have for the company and chart a forward course for profitability progress.

This is my first retreat in a long time. With this group, I have attended the past couple of management meetings. One meeting, the CEO chaired. During the second, he quickly finished his important items and had to leave. So, the VP chaired the meeting. People joked and laughed, but still accomplished their business, even though the meeting ran twenty minutes longer than ususal.

The difference between the first and second meeting and the beginning and end of the second meeting was startling. Remember the old saying, "when the cat's away ..." However, the feeling of warmth and team during the second meeting was tangible and remarked upon to me by several people following its completion. I hope we can create the second meeting up north for our planning sessions.

Warmly,

Susan
