I fire people very thoughtfully, slowly and carefully as I deeply care about people and the impact a firing decision can have on the lives of the people in a company is profound. Of course, the impact on the fired employee is immediate and painful.
The termination of an individual's employment affects the survivors in the workplace, too; they wonder why the individual was fired and wonder if they will be next.
I always meet with a department following letting a department member go to stress our care and concern about our remaining employees. I also ask their support in moving forward without their peer.
As an at-will employer, I don't need to tell people why they are being fired. I find that most of them know; the department members know, too. Indeed, often everyone in the company knows and has been waiting to see what management will do and when. Often, there is a collective sigh of relief and the longer term, good employees reaffirm their commitment to the company.
Consequently, spending the time to prove that an employee is stealing, for one example, is often not worth the energy and resource commitment.
