Trust Time Off

In the June issue of Inc.com, TechTarget, a Needham, MA interactive media company with 210 employees, is highlighted. The company has no "set policies mandating working hours or detailing sick, personal, or vacation days." The company owner feels these policies have fueled the firm's outstanding growth and helps them attract excellent new employees.

CEO Greg Strakosch, who coaches three athletic teams during the day for his children, believes that adults are trustworthy and can manage their own time. He is quick to acknowledge that employee goals are stretching and measurable, however. Underperformance is not tolerated - seven percent of the workforce was let go last year. Most employees work 50 hour weeks. They are also responsible for setting time off in advance - no calling the supervisor on a Monday to take the week off.

He admits employees have been fired for abusing the policy and reaching goals is not a debatable issue.

Note that the TechTarget workforce is highly educated, highly skilled, and the company has a careful selection process that seeks out autonomous people.

Interesting concept, wouldn't you say? I'd like to have a workforce I felt I could trust with fewer policies and procedures. It would require massive culture change in most companies.
