It's not tomorrow but I did want to continue my discussion of my 6/5/2003 entry. The Inc.com article I reference spoke about the study of leadership and how the charismatic leader has traditionally been the leadership model people thought of first. In the case of a charismatic leader, other employees are driven by the strength of his or her vision or drive.
The article says about charismatic leadership, "It eats its young. It demands of leaders far more than it gives back. For entrepreneurs, it's toxic. Watch it at work in an entrepreneurial business, and you begin to see why so many company builders find it so hard to get their organizations to get things done - even the most mundane things." Business owners wonder why they have so little to show for all the energy and time they have invested.
Michael S. Hopkins, the author, suggests that there are four rules to using a new kind of leadership which he calls antiheroic. The first is, "Ask why you're here. Know what you want. Don't apologize." As selfish as some of you may feel this sounds, the reason your company exists is to meet your needs, if you are owner. More later ...

A favorite long-term quote of mine appears in this article about creating a vision, for you, your life, your work. My memory is that this study, and thus the quotation information, was debunked in an early Fast Company article, so there's not a word of truth to it. It's a "wish it were true" statement ... I'd love for it to be true, but it's not. Prior to the Fast Company article, I used this quote, too. Okay, I found the debunking article. The vision article is still worth reading.
