Employee Theft

I have been thinking about firing employees today and the nature of the "at will" relationship with employers. As my investigation at one company has continued, I am not convinced that all people fired deserved to be fired, but I don't think people understood how important it was for them to come forward with evidence when we were making these decisions. We did the best we could with the information we had.

As an "at-will" employer, we fired people "at-will." A theft investigation would have taken months and months of energy and time that is not available in this growing business. Consequently, I am altering the language in the employee handbook to encourage and, even pay, people who are willing to come forward and tell us about theft. What has been your experience of this?

Warmly,

Susan
