No link today, because I wanted to tell you about three marvelous events I experienced today.
We drove down our driveway to the house (1/4 mile) and rounding a bend, we saw a mother duck with a trail of baby ducks, trying unsuccessfully to catch and stay up with her. We stopped the car and watched in awe. The babies could not have been more than a day old; they were the tiniest ducks I have ever seen. They moved too swiftly to count, but I have never seen so many babies in a group before; obviously their predators had not had time to do them in.
Then, we went to a baby naming ceremony and the privilege of being part of this beautiful service was moving. This is a Jewish tradition that should be adopted by people of all religions. What an amazing grounding for the baby and her parents! The child is given two names in addition to her birth-given names. The names are chosen by the parents and reflect qualities the family most hopes the child will emulate as she grows up. I sang songs I've never sung before, and rejoiced in the closeness of the friends and family present.
To top off a wonderful day, driving home, we rounded a bend in the freeway, to find something that looked like the sun, a huge orange-red ball of fire, sitting on the horizon. I don't believe I've ever felt so close to the sun before, nor seen it glow with such glory. Fitting for Emily's naming day.
Warmly,
Susan
