I spent most of the weekend reading and want to recommend two excellent books.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth in this wonderful series by J.K. Rowling. It's one of my favorite sets of books of all time to read. And, I'm quite a reader, as those who read this weblog know. About's Elizabeth Kennedy has a good piece on censorship of childrens' books. Harry Potter books are heading the current list. Here's her review of the current book.
The second, The Life of Pi, is one of the best novels I've read in memory. While the story is engaging - Pi Patel grows up as the son of a zookeeper in Pondicherry, India until the family sets out on a tanker to emigrate to Canada - the author's writing is what held me enthralled. A tragic event occurs on their journey and Pi spends the next 227 days at sea in a life boat with a Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker. The story of his coping and their journey is a great read. When you get to the end, please share with me whether you like the story with the animals or the one without ... I prefer the animals ...
Warmly,
Susan
