Develop Your Talent

In What Really Works: The 4+2 Formula for Sustained Business Success the authors (Joyce, Nohria and Roberson), analyze the data from the Evergreen project, a five year study in which consultants and professors had collected and analyzed ten years of data on 160 companies and 200 management practices. The authors found that successful companies master six management practices.

I wrote in mid-June about several of the practices. Today, I'll highlight "Make Talent Stick Around and Develop More." After you have achieved the four required practices: clear, focused strategy, executed flawlessly, a performance-based culture and a fast, flat organization, you must concentrate on mastering two of the recommended secondary practices.

This is the first. About half of the winning companies mastered this practice. They dedicated major resources to developing people. They also showed a preference for developing their talent from inside their organizations. They designed jobs that would intrigue and challenge the people they really wanted to keep. They involved executives and managers in recruiting and selecting people. They hunted for the smartest people they could find.

Take a look at What Really Works. You'll be happy you did. Better than your average business book.

Warmly,

Susan
