Dear People,
Subtle ways that organizations have of making some people less important than others is my pet peeve today. A recent situation, that has been experienced many times in the past in various client organizations, was brought to my attention.
A client organization schedules their minimal number of conference rooms via Outlook. When the HR assistant and a whole session of people who are scheduled for new employee orientation arrive, she finds the conference room occupied by an executive meeting. Bravely, she informs them that she has the conference room reserved via the appropriate process. Most people exit graciously. Some say "we'll be done in a couple of minutes."
As you know, that "couple of minutes" causes the whole meeting to mill around in the hall, the HR assistant to begin looking for a new location and after time passes, the group gets the room, without an apology. But the "more important" people got their needs met. What a message to send to people. Some are more important that others. Some don't need to reserve the conference room. And, even if you reserve the conference room, so what. Hmmmm. Not my kind of organization. I sent out a memo. We'll see how it is received.
A management and leadership philosophy of involvement and equality ...
Warmly,
Susan
