December 15, 2000 951am CST The traditional book isn't going anywhere for a long, long time. I don't care what tech-enthusiasts say. Bound paper is still far-superior to electronic devices for ease-of-use, cost, and durability. It is true that one can use find commands with e-texts, but a good index in a printed or manuscript book is almost as useful. The experience of reading from a codex is much more enjoyable than reading from a screen. Computer displays, as good as they have become, are still harder on the eyes than the printed page. Furthermore, there is a tactile element of reading a traditional book that one does not get with an e-text. Books require no batteries, nor special hardware. Simply a literate person who is able to see the page.
