May 21, 2001 1143am CST Yesterday I received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas. I received from the college the designation of distinction and from the University Honors Program the designation of honors. I would like to thank those who helped me celebrate my graduation, whether near or far. A special thanks to sco, Levi, and Christian who opened up their home for my reception.
As I lay awake last night thinking of what I had done, I realized that graduation is not about finishing something. Even the words we use - graduation, degree - point to levels of achievement, not to the completion of anything. Now that I have a B.A., I have only reached the next level. From here, I could do any number of things. I could go on to work, continue in school for more degrees, do research, start my own business, or whatever. But I can't rest on my laurels, because I am not really finished. Nobody is.
