August 17, 2001 339pm CDT Guess what I got yesterday. A sheet of parchment upon which the following words can be found:
The University of Kansas By the authority of the Board of Regents of the State of Kansas and upon the recommendation of the Faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences confers upon Jonathan Vail Williams the degree of Bachelor of Arts Humanities with all its rights, privileges, and responsibilities. Given under the seal of the University of Kansas this twentieth day of May, two thousand and one.

August 17, 2001 1124am CDT I always thought that those people who prefer vinyl to CDs are just strange. After all, a CD is a nearly perfect reproduction of the studio performance, right? And vinyls have all of this noise. Last night, however, I finally understood why these people feel this way. The thing is, the medium itself is part of the art form. Just as oil paints are different from watercolor, vinyl is different from digital audio. If an artist intends for his work to be heard on vinyl, then the vinyl record is the definitive edition of his work. A CD is merely a print. It may be a very good print, but it still loses something in translation.
