I'm adopting a new standard lunch. Modeled after the ploughman's lunch, my new lunch will consist of a small loaf of bread, a large hunk of cheese, a pickle (or pickled onion), and - when practical - a pint of bitter. Every once in a while I will add to that a bit of dried beef or beef jerky. I may occasionally eat this meal with broth or gravy.
It may seem odd that I would wish to make such a simple meal a standard. But this lunch is perfect for me. It is easily prepared, it tastes good, it has a lot of calories, it is inexpensive (except for the beer), the ingredients are easily obtained, and I can vary the kinds of bread and cheese according to my tastes. It won't give me indigestion, like so many instant meals and takeout foods do.
What compelled me to adopt such a simple standard lunch? I can only guess. Perhaps it is my dislike of preparing food for just myself. Perhaps it is the realization that I am not getting enough calories in my diet. Perhaps I am attaching a certain kind of romance to simplicity of diet. Perhaps I just want to be different. Who knows?
