It is a terrible thing to take human life, even when it can be justified. Fifty-seven years ago we took 45,000 of them in one moment. I do not mean to condemn the action, nor those individuals who carried out the order to drop the bomb. The Second World War had to be fought, and the bomb was the way to end it. While this justification may mitigate our guilt, it does not remove it. We are still responsible for that tragic loss. We should still grieve for the victims and remember our role in the tragedy. We owe it to ourselves not to forget this day.
