Standards and the Strength of the Collective

This post (And this weblog) has a new home.

In talking about the next generation of open standards and web services, most people focus on the negative effects that monopolistic tendencies of dominant vendors like Microsoft and IBM may have on the marketplace, but that's really only half of the story.

One of the most important and easily ignored part of the process of generating consensus on a "standard" is the active review by a wide audience and application (in the lab, so to speak) to a representative sample of use cases.  Without a standards body and community to grant legitimacy and encourage cooperation, it is difficult if not impossible for any one party or small number of parties to achieve the same level of quality and completeness acting alone.
