Top cop slams row over crime figures
Claims that Surrey has twice the crime rate of New York have been slammed by the borough police chief, who is adamant comparisons are impossible to make. The findings were first printed in a Conservative election manifesto leaflet delivered to homes in the neighbouring borough of Elmbridge.
But Chief Superintendent Craig Crathern of north Surrey Police said the claims added to the fear of crime and said the figures did not reflect crime levels in Epsom.
He said: "New York police have more murders in a week than Surrey Police have in a year. You cannot measure or compare. And we would record things such as threatening phone calls as a crime, which is not done in New York.
