Prison health funding transferred to Welsh Assembly Government
Health and Social Services Minister Jane Hutt today announced that funding for prison health services has transferred from the Home Office to the Welsh Assembly Government with effect from 1 April 2003.

The number of people in jail in England and Wales reaches an all time high of more than 73,000 inmates.

Prisons ordered to review spending
The public spending watchdog has ordered the Prison Service to review the way it buys supplies.
A report by the National Audit Office (NAO) released on Friday could save £12 million a year but cutting the amount of supplies it holds in stock.
The Prison Service spent £461 million on essential supplies such as prisoners' food, clothing, and drug and educational programmes last year.

Jails free extra 5,000 offenders to cut crowding
The number of criminals released early from sentences for robbery, assault and other serious offences increased by 5,000 last year after a Government push to combat the rise in Britain's jail population.
