U.S. Prison Population Surpasses 2 Million
The number of people in U.S. prisons and jails has surpassed 2 million for the first time, according to a Justice Department report released on Sunday.
Prisons and jails held one out of every 142 U.S. residents. The prison and jail population, long the world's largest, has almost doubled since 1990.

Thousands to get early release in prison crowding crisis
Thousands of muggers, burglars and thieves are to be released from prison early in a desperate attempt to curb the soaring prison population.
Ministers are drawing up plans to double electronic tagging for criminals serving less than four years in jail.
