Interesting new Austin Company - with a focus on a triad of my personal interests (Wireless/PANs/PCs):

What is the company?

Alereon, Inc. is a new fabless semiconductor company focused on developing and deploying UWB chipsets for personal area networking applications that comply with the emerging IEEE standard (802.15.3a). The Company is targeting very high bandwidth, low-power, low-cost solutions to connect wirelessly consumer electronics, personal computing, and mobile devices. Alereon's first product will be compatible with the emerging IEEE 802.15.3a standard for PAN communications. Large consumer electronics and personal computing companies are participating in the formation of the standard and several are working with Alereon as it develops its first chipset product.

What is 802.15.3a?

A new standard for a high data rate, 20 Mbps or greater, for WPANs. The 802.15 WPAN Task Group 3TG3 is looking at providing a solution that is low power and low cost, addressing the needs of digital imaging and multimedia applications. The new standard will comply with the TG1 standard.

What is a PAN?

A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for communication among computer devices (including telephones and personal digital assistants) close to one person. The devices may or may not belong to the person in question. The reach of a PAN is typically a few meters. PANs can be used for communication among the personal devices themselves (intrapersonal communication), or for connecting to a higher level network and the Internet (an uplink).

Personal area networks may be wired with computer buses such as USB and Firewire. Wireless PANs can also be made possible with network technologies such as IrDA and Bluetooth.
