New Chief Abizaid Is Departure From Previous Army Leaders
"Army Gen. John P. Abizaid always knew that the responsibilities of leading the U.S. Central Command were enormous. But as Centcom's deputy commander, he also knew they were someone else's. When you're the number two guy, you always say to yourself, 'Gee, the CinC's sure got a big problem, I wonder how he's gonna get out of this one,' " he said in a recent interview, using the military term for commander in chief. "Now, it's me."
In July, the 52-year-old Lebanese American from California became chief of Central Command, the U.S. military headquarters for Iraq and the rest of the Middle East, after serving as deputy to Gen. Tommy R. Franks."
