GLORY HOLE GIRL - LADIES' ROOM RIGHTS FIGHT
That's the cry of two Brooklyn lawmakers who say Jane needs twice as many johns as John.
They've proposed a bill in the City Council that says for every "water closet" - building-code speak for toilet or urinal - offered to men, two should be offered to women.
Yvette Clarke and Bill de Blasio, both Democrats, say their bill will give women "restroom equity" with men - and curb ladies' room waiting times.
"Every woman can recall a situation when she has waited in a long line to use the bathroom while there was no line for a neighboring men's restroom," the proposed bill says.
"[T]he absence of sufficient women's bathrooms in many places of public assembly, and the resultant lines for women's bathrooms, is one of the most blatant, demeaning, and visible forms of gender discrimination in our society," it adds.
The proposal would cover auditoriums, stadiums, theaters, dance halls, bars and the like. If enacted, it would apply to all new construction and renovations.
The legislators also want to mandate a minimum number of places to go when you gotta go.
Council officials said California, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Washington have enacted such "restroom equity" laws and that the 2003 International Building Code requires twice as many water closets for women as for men.
Clarke and de Blasio could not be reached for comment on their proposal yesterday.
Women are getting more commodes in new public buildings around the country - but instead of a 2-to-1 ratio, some building codes require a 3-to-2 ratio instead.
Some in the plumbing industry argue that the number of toilets needs to be increased for both sexes.
A law professor at George Washington University who calls himself the "father of potty parity" argues that restroom equity - also known as "squatter's rights" - is a legal right supported by federal appeals courts.
"Hopefully, women will be able to stand up for their rights, even if they can't always stand up while exercising those rights," writes John F. Banzhaf III.
