Ontario School Library Association Press Release

May 15, 2003
Gillian Chan wins provincial White Pine Award...

The Ontario School Library Association is pleased to announce that the winner of the White Pine Reading Program is A Foreign Field, written by Gillian Chan and published by Kids Can Press.

This historical young adult novel was read by close to 1000 students from approximately 70 Ontario high schools who selected this as their clear favourite from a selection of 10 Canadian young adult books. Runners-up in popularity included Surviving Sam by Karen Rivers (Polestar) and Parvana's Journey (Groundwood).

The White Pine Award will be presented to Gillian Chan at one of the high schools that participated in the White Pine program.

The White Pine is a provincial reading program for high school students sponsored by the Ontario School Library Association. Students read 10 nominated Canadian young adult books and then vote for their favourite book. Based on student voting across the province, the most popular book is then selected and author is honoured with the White Pine Award.

For more information about the White Pine reading program, see the reading programs section of the Ontario School Library Association website
