A Crusade Born of a Suffering Infant's Cry. Dr. Eduard Verhagen of the University Medical Center in the Netherlands has presided over the medically induced deaths of four extraordinarily ill newborns. By By GREGORY CROUCH. [NYT > Home Page]

I read this after seeing Pat Buchahan on a TV show comparing the people in the 41 year old feedtube case in Florida to Hitler and Nazi Germany in 1930s. Who are these people who are trying to make moral decisions at an arm's length or more removal from the situation? This guy is willing to be on the front lines in some very, very murky pesonal decisions that parents and families have to make. Because he is willing to do, we (as a society) need to trust him with the discretion to do the right thing. I think the most meaningful observation in this (and there are many) is this

I mean, it's difficult to give the right emotion there, but it's beautiful in a way," he said, somewhat aware of how this might sound to a layman. "They are children who are severely ill and in great pain. It is after they die that you see them relaxed for the first time. You see their faces in a way they should be for the first time."
