Settlements Set in Fund Cases. WASHINGTON, March 23 (AP) - Citigroup will pay a civil fine of $20 million and Putnam Investments will pay $40 million to resolve federal regulators' accusations that they kept from customers the fact that brokers had been paid to recommend certain mutual funds, creating a conflict of interest. ChoicePoint's Checks Under Fire. Even though a federal law requires consumer reporting agencies to either verify the data they give employers or notify job applicants about negative reports, ChoicePoint appears to be doing neither in some cases. By Kim Zetter. [Wired News]

Boy, I hope there is someone at unnamed HR outsourcing organization reading the news these days... And, checking under the covers with their various vendors to be sure that the appropriate updates of records is going on. Now is the time to be very ,very clean on this cause I don't think "we were a little diorganized" will cut it in the world of public opinion right now.
  It is funny to me that marketing types think if they put their fingers in their ears and yell load enough, they can't hear other people and therefore, the situatuion must be ok  This does seem to refute that, huh

Six percent of US consumers have switched banks due to concerns over identity theft, according to a new study by research firm Financial Insights. In a survey of 1,000 consumers, nearly 60 percent expressed concern about identity theft. "Recent high-profile incidents of customer data theft at Bank of America (NYSE: BAC - news) , ChoicePoint (NYSE: CPS - news) and LexisNexis may drive bank customers to worry further about the possibility of experiencing identity theft," said Sophie Louvel, research analyst at Financial Insights. The company advises financial institutions to introduce more proactive identity theft victim support and to provide identity theft prevention and detection tools to consumers.
