Peace and Human Rights for the People of Burma
"I would like [the west] to see us not as a country rather far away whose sufferings do not matter, but as fellow human beings in need of human rights and who could do so much for the world, if we were allowed."
Aung San Suu Ki
Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested again on May 30, 2003 by the ruling military junta of Myanmar during a violent clash between members of the National League for Democracy and junta supporters. The international community has responded by requesting the immediate release of Suu Kyi. Support has come from the UN, who sent an envoy, the International Red Cross, the US, Amnesty International, and more, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, who pressed the military junta to release pro-democracy leader Suu Kyi.
The Karen Human Rights Group has independently documented how the situation faced by Karen peoples is worsening as more and more parts of certain Districts are being brought under the control of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) through the increased militarisation of the region.
