Worsening Human Rights Climate in Guatemala
Former dictator, Efran Rios Montt, has been declared eligible to run for president in our November elections. He was responsible for the genocide of over 70,000 people in the early [OE]80[base ']s. Now he and his party, the Guatemalan Republican Front (FRG) are showing his brutal ways again. The week before last 3,000 people were trucked into Guatemala City to rampage through the streets intimidating journalists, judges, human rights defenders and the general public. This action was clearly coordinated by the FRG.
Human rights defenders have been receiving death threats and intimidation. Our Human Rights Ombudsman announced the existence of a black list of journalists and human rights defenders who are at risk of being killed.
