Three major credit card companies, Visa, Mastercard and American Express are known to be conducting trials using contactless payment systems that are based on RFID technology.  In one novel example, Mastercard is teaming with Nokia to offer RFID-enabled mobile phones that can be used by consumers for fast and convenient purchases.  PowerPay is offering similar convenience focusing on payments for concessions at sporting events.

Jeff Woods from Gartner Research offers his assessment on how suppliers can benefit from Wal-Mart's requirement that they adopt RFID by 2005.  Initially, suppliers will just view the RFID requirement as a cost of doing business with Wal-Mart.  Eventually, these suppliers can reap benefits by developing RFID-centric systems that make their businesses more efficient.
