Stories From the Web
Here's a site to put on our summer reading brochures. From the Birmingham Libraries, UK, it offers places for students to read about books and authors as well as post their own reviews, stories and poems.

Rutgers Opens Center To Study School Libraries
I have read several references to this new center at Rutgers, but I hadn't added it to this weblog before now. It sounds good, but I guess I haven't been as interested, because I'm on the lookout for more practical stuff. On the other hand, if they can really come up with hard data that shows that school libraries make a difference in the teaching/learning process, I'll be very interested, especially if they can show exactly what about school libraries is valuable.

Enlisting the Young as White-Hat Hackers
A free after-school program in Maine teaches young hackers the basics of ethical hacking, or how to use their skills for good instead of evil. By Julie Flaherty. [New York Times: Technology]
This is what we should be doing inside our schools, instead of leaving it to be done by outside groups. The kids in this program are the kind who don't see much use to school, but they would if we would offer them this kind of practical education that takes advantage of their interests and their skills.
