Censorship Isn't the Answer
Childrens book steps on minefield. "A Little Piece Of Ground," by Elizabeth Laird is the target of a censorship campaign. Groups pressure the publisher to reconsider putting out the novel. [ Toronto Star article] The campaign appears to have originated with a letter written by the co-owner of two children's bookstores in Vancouver. Before the book was released this month, Phyllis Simon, co-owner of Kidsbooks, requested MacMillan UK to reconsider sending out the "damaging book." [LISNews.com]

I really liked Laird's "Kiss the Dust," which could also be considered a one-sided view of an international crisis. There are plenty of books that do the same. If we are teaching our children to think and read critically, it doesn't matter. It does matter if one or the other side of a story never gets told.
