Plagiarism on the Rise
A Campus Fad That's Being Copied: Internet Plagiarism. Thirty-eight percent of the undergraduate students surveyed said that they had engaged in one or more instances of "cut-and-paste" plagiarism. By Sara Rimer. [New York Times: Technology]
Plagiarism is just a symptom of a problem that has always been there and probably always will. We'll never do away with cheating, although I wish that school honor codes and discussions about ethics and integrity were more prevalent. What concerns me most in my role as school librarian, however, and is perhaps something I can do my little part to combat, is summed up in this quote:
"There are a lot of students who are growing up with the Internet who are convinced that anything you find on the Internet is public knowledge and doesn't need to be cited."
