I'm just not sure anymore, what it is going to take. More manpower for one. The nation wants to be prepared yet, is not prepared to pay for it.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nearly two years after the Sept. 11 attacks, the United States remains ``dangerously unprepared'' to handle another catastrophic attack, according to a study by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Now for Adam Curry's thoughts. Crap, this will never end.

my $0.02 on the rss debate. It wasn't until I read Sjoerd's expanaition of the differences between RSS and Echo that I remember what I think was Dave's original name that begat the acronym: Rich Site Summary. That describes something entirely different to a syndication format. Ofcourse it's an excellent syndication format at the same tuime, because it's really a bare-bones view of what is actually displayed on your weblog's homepage. I wonder if netscape came up with the Really Simple Syndication when they hijacked the name for what they called rss1.0.

In the end, this is all about marketing and branding. Something I find most developers aren't very good at. Because they believe in truth, like 1=true. Real life, just ain't like that.

>a href="http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes.php3?author=Rita+Mae+Brown">Rita Mae Brown sums it up with this quote: "For you to be successful, sacrifices must be made. It's better that they are made by others but failing that, you'll have to make them yourself." [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]

This is all too silly. No one is acting like an adult!

RSS funk. I didn't want to dirty my hands with the RSS/Echo controversy (since I don't use an aggregator and I don't have any control over my RSS feed), but eventually my curiosity overcame me. I tracked the RSS funk to its source and I have to wonder what these people were thinking. Extensions are great, but it's a well-known principle that extensions are for adding new features, not replacing features that already exist in the base spec. If you think RSS has bugs, you can't make them go away by adding more. [Hack the Planet]

I Won't Miss Him

Looks like Scripting News is taking a hiatus. I wonder, if everyone just cooled down and took a weeks break how everything would be then? What do you think?

I won't miss him any more than I'd miss Dvorak if he gave up writing and spouting drivel. Dave Winer is a prime example of "you reap what you sow."

Scripting News is taking a break.

The lack of support, even name-calling, from people who think of themselves as my friend, has got me thinking that maybe this isn't worth it. And the abuse from others, bordering on cruelty, is intolerable.

I'm thinking about all the services I provide and UserLand provides, for free, after years of pouring money and energy into community building, and the lack of appreciation for any of that in the community.

So I'm shutting down Scripting News now, to give me some time to think, and to give you all a demo of what it would be like if it weren't here. These last few days have been really awful. You can't imagine what it's like to have so many people screaming at you. It's inhuman, especially considering that my health isn't that good. The only conclusion I can come to is that I shouldn't be doing this.

Give it some thought. This is what it would look like if there were no Scripting News. What would it be worth to you, not in monetary terms, but in support terms, to keep this going.

I'm not willing to go on without more support.

Best wishes.

Dave

Online Primary

Now this is kind of interesting

"... a virtual political event, and perhaps the biggest, was an online poll last week by the liberal website MoveOn.org. It invited its 1.4 million members to vote for one of the nine Democratic presidential candidates in a controlled balloting. The result was a virtual "primary" with more votes than the party could muster in New Hampshire and Iowa."

Honestly, I was not sure whether I had clicked the right button. I should be given another chance to do a left-click on my favorite icon !!

Little Joke

From All Thing Interesting comes this cute little joke....

John Ashcroft is visiting an elementary School. After 15 minutes speaking he says, "I will now answer any questions you have."

Bobby stands up and says: "Mr. Ashcroft, I have 4 questions:

1. How did Bush win the election with fewer votes than Gore?

2. Why are you using the American Patriot Act to limit civil liberties?

3. Why haven't you caught Osama Bin Laden?

4. Where are the weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq?" Just then the bell rang and the kids rushed out to play.

Upon returning Mr. Ashcroft said: "I'm sorry we were interrupted. I will answer any questions you have."

A little girl named Julie stands up and says: "I have 6 questions:

1. How did Bush win the election with fewer votes than Gore?

2. Why are you invoking the American Patriot Act to limit civil liberties?

3. Why haven't you caught Osama Bin Laden?

4. Where are the weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq?

5. Why did the bell ring 20 minutes early?

6. Where is Bobby?"

U.S. Begins Operations to End Insurgents in Iraq

Well, it's about time. I wonder how many deaths could have been prevented if we had done this sooner?
