Norman Mailer—always fascinating in his prime if sometimes off-the-wall and over the top-- has a piece on why we went to war in Iraq (New York Review of Books, July 15. Perhaps I’m now as off-the-wall as he—since the piece makes a great deal of sense. . .

My adolescent/adult life appears to have three stages:

- -       figuring out who I am and who I want to be

- -   struggling with the contradictions and challenges of who I am and who I want to be

---   abandoning the struggle and going gentle into that good night.

I believe I’ve arrived at stage 3.
