“Who would have imagined that foreign policy and terrorism might become the administration's weak point?” writes E. J. Dionne.
That's a slam-dunk question. Anybody who realized that trying to turn the security agencies into lapdogs after the cosmic security failure of 911 has got to be a ticking time bomb. . . That's who!
If 911 represents a security failure, then fix the failure—and that can't possibly mean politicizing Intel. It's bad enough that Sandra Day O'Connor was transformed from independent swing justice to lapdog with the Supremes' selection of Prez Bush in 2000. It's something O'Connor already regrets and will live to regret—and possibly even reveal in a tell-all autobiography after she retires from the bench. But intimidating the CIA is beyond corruption. . .It's terrifying!
After 911 we needed
- A review of why our intelligence failed (the report that Bush and his cohorts are stonewalling on)
- A reliable and independent Intel operation--one that is more --not less--driven by Karl Rove's priorities.
