"We hit Saddam for one simple reason--because we could," wrote Thomas Friedman in The New York Times on June 4. No, Tom, I'm afraid we couldn't. Beating up the school bully to deter other bullies is a lousy excuse for waging a unilateral war. If the purpose was to send them--the Arab-Muslim world--a message, I'm afraid their eyes went straight to the subtext of Halliburton, occupation, crusading Christians, oil grab, and all that other inconvenient stuff. They question our motives--which isn't all that surprising, now that WMDs haven't turned up, Tenet is taking a bullet for Bush, and Condi is about to take a bullet for Cheney. I'm afraid that I too question our motives--and I'm apparently not alone, according to the latest Washington Post/ABC news poll.
