Post-Wars
Is war--like slavery, apartheid and oppression of women--headed for history's dustbin?

Knight Ridder reporters Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay are on fire! First came their story on the deplorable lack of planning and government in-fighting that undoubtedly contributed to the post-war debacle in Iraq.

Next there's the July 16 story about spooked spooks at the CIA and other intelligence agencies who objected vigorously to a Bush administration assessment of the threat of Syria's weapons of mass destruction that was to be presented Tuesday on Capitol Hill. After the objections, the planned testimony by Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton, a leading administration hawk, was delayed until September.

U.S. officials told Knight Ridder that Bolton was prepared to tell members of a House of Representatives International Relations subcommittee that Syria's development of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons had progressed to such a point that they posed a threat to stability in the region.

Where have Strobel and Landay been all my life--and what will they do for an encore? The real subtext, of course, is that disgruntled Pubbies, spooks and military people can't wait to spill the beans to a press that finally seems to be paying attention. Expect to find Rove, Cheney et al spreading disinformation--and the press winding up with egg all over its face. . .I'd do the same if I were in the administration's place right now. The reporters and the readers need to be very, very careful and critical of what they hear.
