Is war--like slavery, apartheid and oppression of women--headed for history's dustbin?

Why are we in Iraq?

Mr. Rumsfeld thought the war could showcase his transformation of the military to be leaner and more agile. Paul Wolfowitz thought the war could showcase his transformation of Iraq into a democracy. Dick Cheney thought the war could showcase his transformation of America into a dominatrix superpower. Karl Rove thought the war could showcase his transformation of W. into conquering hero. And Mr. Bush thought the war could showcase his transformation from family black sheep into historic white hat. -Maureen Dowd

We hit Saddam for one simple reason--because we could, wrote Thomas Friedman in the June 4 NY Times.

In an August 13  Financial Times piece, Jeffrey Sachs asks:  Why did we really launch a preemptive war against Iraq? The plot thickened with the release last month of the US Congressional investigation into September 11. It seems increasingly likely that Iraq was attacked because Saudi Arabia was deeply implicated in the terrorist attacks.
