Right now I'm preoccupied by the movie The Triplets of Belleville. I haven't seen it, and that's perhaps one reason it has remained a focus of my attention for such a long time. I've looked at the well-designed and delightful sites -- I've found three official ones, the one for France, for Britain, and the one for the US.
There's a terrific (Flash-based?) photo 'book' you can look at on the French and British sites (click the object near the top labeled 'photos'to see it)...
It's the artwork that I'm crazy about! (Of course, that's what I've seen so far, as opposed to the animation/movement, story, soundtrack, etc.) Go look at those wonderful artwork stills (in'photos' as described above)! I'm particularly crazy about the scene backgrounds: the ones showing the city all piled up on top of itself (I've got one of them downloaded from the site as a desktop on my Mac), the varied exteriors in the country, on the sea, and in the city, the cosy interiors, the style of line drawings with color washes, the evocative colors and emphases on the spots of light or dark that give it all shape...
My understanding is that the movie is still in limited release in this country -- and this is not one of the limited release cities. (But I'm not 100% sure of that, and it's possible that if it was here for only a short time, I missed it.) I'm struck by the power of these superb artworks -- for each one is just that in and of itself, as well as part of a movie -- to tell a story or express emotions and atmosphere so strongly. Boy, I'd like to do something as terrific as that (I'll settle for a few small watercolors or drawings I can call my own for now).|
